What is Tax Preparation?

Tax preparation is the process of organizing your income information, deductions, credits, and supporting documents, then completing and filing the appropriate tax return. This can include a T1 personal return (and related schedules such as the T2125 for self-employment or the T776 for rental income), a T2 corporate return for incorporated businesses, and a T3 trust returnfor estates and trusts that need to report income, deductions, and allocations to beneficiaries. A properly prepared return helps you avoid filing errors and CRA delays, reduce the risk of reassessments or penalties, maximize eligible deductions and credits, and ensure your final balance (or refund) is calculated correctly.

Who Should Book a Tax Appointment?

Booking a tax appointment is a good fit if you need to file your annual personal taxes (T1), have self-employment income (sole proprietor or contractor), own rental property or have rental income, sold investments, crypto, or property and need capital gains reporting, or want help responding to CRA letters, reviews, or adjustments. It’s also a good fit if you operate anincorporated business and need a T2 corporate return, if you’re dealing with payroll or GST/HST reporting that needs to tie into year-end, or if you’re a trustee, executor, or beneficiary contact who needs help filing aT3 trust returnfor an estate or trust. If you’ve experienced life changes (marriage, moving, children, school, a new job, starting a business, or incorporating), we can also help ensure your filing reflects those changes correctly and you’re not surprised by what you owe.

What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment

For your appointment, bring what applies to your situation—if you’re unsure, bring it anyway. For personal filings, this typically includes valid government-issued photo ID, your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your spouse/partner’s information (if applicable), and names and birthdates for dependants (if applicable). Bring your income slips such as T4, T4A, T5/T3, T4E, T5007, and T2202 (tuition) if you’re a student, along with documents for common deductions and credits such as RRSP contribution slips, childcare receipts, medical receipts, donation receipts, union/professional dues (if not shown on your T4), moving expenses (if eligible), and interest paid on student loans.

If you’re self-employed, bring a summary of income (invoices, deposits, or sales totals), expense receipts (supplies, fuel, advertising, meals, home office, and other applicable expenses), a vehicle log showing business-use percentage if you plan to claim vehicle expenses, and any bookkeeping reports you have (QuickBooks, Wave, spreadsheets, etc.). If you have rental income, bring rental income totals, expense documents (repairs, insurance, property taxes, utilities, mortgage interest, and other related costs), and any purchase or sale documents if the property changed ownership.

If you’re filing a T2 corporate return, bring your year-end financial information (trial balance or financial statements), bookkeeping reports, bank and credit card statements (if needed to reconcile), details of any loans, asset purchases or sales, and shareholder information such as dividends paid, shareholder loan activity, or major changes during the year. If the corporation has payroll, bring payroll summaries and any T4/T4A information, and if GST/HST applies, bring filing history or reports so everything ties together cleanly at year-end.

If you’re filing a T3 trust return, bring trust or estate documents (trust deed or will/executor documents), the trust’s tax year information, a list of trustees and beneficiaries, and the trust’s income documents such as investment statements, slips, and bank records. If distributions were made or are payable to beneficiaries, bring the details of those amounts and dates so allocations and beneficiary reporting can be prepared correctly.

If available, CRA items are very helpful—please bring your most recent Notice of Assessment, any CRA letters you’ve received, and access to CRA My Account. For corporations and trusts, CRA notices and prior-year filings are also very helpful for keeping reporting consistent and avoiding delays.

Timing & Deadlines

Tax season gets busy quickly, so booking early can help you avoid last-minute stress. The personal filing deadline is typically April 30 each year, and if you are self-employed, the filing deadline is typically June 15, though any balance owing is generally due April 30. Corporate T2 filing deadlines depend on the corporation’s fiscal year-end, and trusts generally have filing deadlines based on their year-end, so booking early is still important—especially if you need financials finalized, allocations completed, or supporting documents gathered before filing.

Remote & Document Drop-off Options

If you can’t make it in person, we can often handle tax preparation through secure document sharing and a phone/Zoom-style appointment. You can also drop off documents in advance so your appointment is quicker and more focused.

Accessibility & Special Accommodations

We aim to make tax appointments straightforward and comfortable. If you need accommodations—extra time, accessibility support, or help organizing documents—just let us know when you book and we’ll work with you.

Most appointments don't take longer than 20 minutes, but if a longer time slot is required we will extend your appointment time.

What if I’m missing a slip?
