What is a T1 Personal Tax Return?

A T1 personal tax return is the annual income tax return most Canadians file to report income, claim deductions and credits, and calculate their refund or balance owing for the year. A properly prepared T1 helps you avoid filing errors and CRA delays, reduce the risk of reassessments or penalties, maximize eligible deductions and credits, and ensure your final tax result is calculated correctly.

Who Should Book an Appointment?

Booking a T1 appointment is a good fit if you need to file your annual personal taxes, want help ensuring everything is reported correctly, or have any complexity that could affect what you owe. This includes if you have employment income and multiple slips, changed jobs or moved, got married or separated, have dependants, are a student, or are claiming common deductions and credits. It’s also a great fit if you have self-employment income (contractor/sole proprietor), rental income, sold investments, crypto, or property and need capital gains reporting, want help responding to CRA letters, reviews, or adjustments, or need to file previous years to stay compliant and protect benefits.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

For your appointment, bring what applies to you—if you’re unsure, bring it anyway. This typically includes valid government-issued photo ID, your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your spouse/partner’s information (if applicable), and names and birthdates for dependants (if applicable). Bring your income slips such as T4, T4A, T5/T3, T4E, T5007, and T2202 (tuition) if you’re a student. Also bring documents for common deductions and credits such as RRSP contribution slips, childcare receipts, medical receipts, donation receipts, union/professional dues (if not shown on your T4), moving expenses (if eligible), and interest paid on student loans.

If you’re self-employed, bring a summary of income (invoices, deposits, or sales totals), expense receipts (supplies, fuel, advertising, meals, home office, and other applicable expenses), a vehicle log showing business-use percentage if you plan to claim vehicle expenses, and any bookkeeping reports you have (QuickBooks, Wave, spreadsheets, etc.). If you have rental income, bring rental income totals, expense documents (repairs, insurance, property taxes, utilities, mortgage interest, and other related costs), and any purchase or sale documents if the property changed ownership.

If available, CRA items are very helpful—please bring your most recent Notice of Assessment, any CRA letters you’ve received, and access to CRA My Account.

Timing & Deadlines

Tax season gets busy quickly, so booking early can help you avoid last-minute stress. The personal filing deadline is typically April 30 each year, and if you are self-employed, the filing deadline is typically June 15, though any balance owing is generally due April 30. If you’re expecting a refund or need proof of income for loans or benefits, filing earlier can help.

Remote & Document Drop-off Options

If you can’t make it in person, we can often handle T1 tax preparation through secure document sharing and a phone/Zoom-style appointment. You can also drop off documents in advance so your appointment is quicker and more focused.

Accessibility & Special Accommodations

We aim to make tax appointments straightforward and comfortable. If you need accommodations—extra time, accessibility support, or help organizing documents—just let us know when you book and we’ll work with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a tax appointment take?

Most appointments don't take longer than 20 minutes, but if a longer time slot is required we will extend your appointment time.

What if I’m missing a slip?

Come anyway. We’ll tell you what’s missing and what’s still possible to complete now vs. later.

Can you file previous years?

Yes—late or missed returns can often be filed, and this can be important for benefits and CRA compliance.

Will you help if I owe money?

Yes. We’ll explain why, what options you have, and how to plan so you’re not caught off guard next year.

Can you maximize my refund?

We’ll ensure you claim eligible deductions/credits and file accurately. If something isn’t allowed, we won’t “force it”—accuracy protects you long-term.
